Frequently Asked Questions
-
We’ll spend about 15 minutes talking by phone or video. You can share a little about what’s bringing you to therapy, ask me anything, and get a sense of how I work. There’s no pressure and no commitment. If it feels like a good fit, we’ll schedule a first session. If it doesn’t, I’m happy to point you toward other resources.
-
The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, what you’ve tried before, and what you’d like to be different. You set the pace. You don’t need to arrive with the right words for what you’re feeling, and you won’t be asked to share anything you’re not ready to share.
-
Welcome, I’m glad you’re considering it. Many of my clients are starting therapy for the first time. You don’t need to know how it works or what to say. Showing up is enough, and we’ll figure out the rest together.
-
That’s real, and it matters. Sometimes it was the wrong fit, the wrong timing, or an approach that didn’t match what you needed. I’d genuinely like to hear about what didn’t work, because it helps us do something different this time.
-
Research consistently shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for most concerns, and many clients find it easier to open up from the comfort of their own space. No commute, no waiting room, and your own couch. If online therapy isn’t a good fit for you, we will find a better answer together.
-
Sessions are 50 minutes over secure, HIPAA-compliant video through my client portal. You’ll receive a link before each session. All you need is a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a phone, tablet, or computer.
-
Find a spot where you can speak freely, ideally a room with a door you can close. Headphones help with privacy if others are home. Beyond that, just come as you are. Coffee/tea/water in hand and pajama pants are entirely acceptable.
-
It happens. If video drops, I’ll work with you to reconnect, switch to phone, or reschedule the remaining time. A glitchy connection will never cost you a session.
-
Yes. I work with teens and adults in Maine and Massachusetts. If you’re a parent looking for support for your teen, you’re welcome to reach out first, and I’m happy to talk with you about whether I’d be a good fit.
-
To begin, I’ll need a parent or guardian’s consent, and I also ask the teen for their own agreement to participate, since therapy tends to work best when they’re on board. Confidentiality matters to the process. Some things need to be shared with parents by law, like safety concerns, but beyond that we’ll talk together about what stays private and what gets shared in a way that supports your teen’s progress. Happy to walk through all of this on a consultation call.
-
Sessions are $120 for 50 minutes. I keep a small number of reduced-fee spots based on circumstances, so if cost is a barrier, please ask. Payment is handled through my secure client portal.
-
I don’t bill insurance directly, but I provide superbills, which are detailed receipts you can submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Many plans cover a portion of the fee. If you’d like to check yours, call the number on your insurance card and ask about “out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits.”
-
Life happens, and I understand. I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice when you need to cancel or reschedule so the time can be offered to someone else. Late cancellations and missed appointments may be charged the full session fee, though I use discretion for illness, emergencies, and the genuinely unavoidable.
-
You’ll need to be physically in Maine or Massachusetts at the time of our sessions, since that’s where I’m licensed. Anywhere in either state works, whether you’re home, parked somewhere quiet, or at your college dorm.
